Joy of Scripture for our Children

February 8, 2022

Getting Scripture into our children’s hearts is of upmost importance. I am frequently asked, what children’s bible should I get so my children understand? I reply, the version you’re reading. I am convinced that children can actually have a deeper understanding with pure undefiled hearts, than we have. They’re capable to learn Scripture and to ancient cultures, the first 5 books called Torah, would’ve been elementary matters, the milk of Scripture.

So as mothers and their teachers we need to get creative of how to help them crave Scripture and want to consume the pages. Here’s example one of how we act it out as we read. The kids love their playmobil or legos to keep their hands busy and connect those synapsis while I am reading. It gets them so excited because they’re getting it while those hard concepts that we are so far removed from come to life before their eyes.

We find using playmobil especially helpful through the prophets

Another easy way is to get out some paper and work through it. We love using watercolors, colored pencils, markers, oil pastels, or any other art medium. This works best with familiar passages that they’ve already visualized, but also visions of Revelation or Ezekiel as well to see how they view concepts such as the heavenly throne room.

Utilizing clay or homemade playdough is also another winner in our home. This works especially well for little ones who need to keep their hands busy while reading through with older siblings. I think this might of been through Noaḥ’s ark portion. Click for our favorite homemade playdo recipe.

My kiddos love dressing up and acting things out. Here my son is Israel/Yisra’ĕl (Jacob/Ya‛aqoḇ) and my daughter is playing Joseph/Yosĕph and holding Ephraim/Ephrayim and Manasseh/Menashsheh while the other tribes are represented by stuffed animals.

Always have a snack of the week to go with the portion you’re doing.

Torah in the Home is what we are using this year for our base Bible curriculum. If you want to know more about how we structure our homeschool, see this post.

We have a zoom time with friends once a week and these are a few of the craft ideas we have done. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or be super fancy.

One of the most cost effective ways to get the Word tucked in your heart is exploring nature and learning about how 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (God’s name) created everything. How amazingly complex He made the earth, plants, and animals to work together. Plant a garden and tend it. Grab some foraging books and learn. Take some paints and color in your favorite flower on some paper.

The last method we really enjoy is song. Putting His Word to music is such a blessed way to learn.
The Estep’s Good Medicine has a new way to learn chunks of Scripture putting them to song. The Revere Project . Definitely check it out!
Left and Right Ministries has amazing set apart music
For memorizing, The Corner Room, The Psalms Project, King Things, and have some quality music to learn Scripture. I also enjoy this version of Psalm 119.

Trained Up in Torah is also another wonderful resource for getting them excited about the Word when you want to use some screen time.

[…] I’m going to walk you through how we observe Pesach. I will add Unleavened Bread to another post. Our first year, we were pretty clueless on what to do. We just asked the Father’s Ruach (Spirit) to guide us. We set the table with some tissue paper and brown craft paper for the parting of the Red Sea. The children loved setting it up with their lego and playmobil figures. […]
